For a lot of people, it can be tough to decide from all the different Careers that are offered out there. For some, they might not want or have need of a secure career that is there all the time for them – instead, they may want or even require something a little irregular, just something to do every now and then to get a little extra money. If you struggle with your Career ideas and don’t know what you wish to do with your life, you could think about taking up various jobs that are offered when there are large events and competitions being held. Quite often major events will generate New careers on their own – this year’s World Cup is expected to generate around 80,000 jobs in South Africa, linked to tourism and construction. They also generate loads of temporary jobs as well, which are perfect for people who either aren’t hunting for New careers and just wish for extra money, or for people who are just hoping to do something a bit different. Here will we look at some of the different jobs various events can generate for people.
Any big event that is held, from something like the World Cup, or a major concert, to something like a local community fair, all have need of security. For the big events, security is a key thing. It is a key concern in South Africa at the moment – not only do we still have the lingering threat of terrorist attacks, South Africa is renowned for its political instability and high crime rates. As a result there has been a massive interest in the level of security existing here. Obtaining a job as part of the security for an event like this will mean you are able to travel the world a bit, and get in to a lot of the major matches of the World Cup. Similarly, security is called for at concerts and events, to guarantee the safety of the public. Getting a job in security of course does pose some danger to your wellbeing, but generally you shall get full training and be set to deal with almost any situation.
Other jobs (which to lots of people will be just as critical as security to these events!) consist of caterers and bar staff. People get hungry and thirsty, and if the event is going to be on for some time, food and drinks will always be made available. So someone needs to be there to serve them up! This type of work allows you close up access to events, minus the element of risk that comes with the security job. If you are a caterer, travelling around to these events can allow you to sample and try out local dishes, so you get experience of dishes you might not have had a chance to experience otherwise.
So as you can see, if you’re in doubt about your Career ideas, or you’re not even hunting for Careers as such, you can still do work which will grant you valuable experience, and let you travel around and visit new places, and also get in on some cool events!
