What is Distance Learning?
Distance learning has moved from mail order courses to high quality college level instruction. Also refered to as online college, online eductation, distance learning degrees, long distance education and e-learning, this way of learning allows people to obtain an educational degree program through an accredited university or college without ever having to set foot in a traditional classroom or travel to a physical campus.
With the rise of the internet, distance learning via mail has become a thing of the past, being replaced by the faster, more full and complete internet experience that everyone is so familiar with. It is actually a better learning experience as well.. With only a computer, internet connectivity and self motivation, you can earn a higher education degree without ever setting foot inside a classroom.
Why Choose Distance Learning Education
The main advantage of distance learning is the flexibility you have, particularly if you are already working full time and have a full load, little ones at home or other “grown up” responsibilities. You can attend class late at night once the children are asleep, or listen to a lecture in the morning before getting ready for your work day. The ability to work at your own pace is the major benefit of online education, and one of the main reasons to consider this kind of college education. Less expensive fees for online courses also makes many online schools more affordable than traditional colleges or universites, giving yet another benefit to those considering expanding on their current education. Finally, the ability to obtain a degree or a certificate, such as the paralegal certifications, is yet another benefit.
Don’t Fall Into These Traps
Unless you are highly self motivated, online education can be tougher than you think. Some students that take online classes complain that they miss the interaction of other students and the professor that can be found on a traditional university or college. Learning online requires the ability to properly structure your time, stay on task and be disiplined in your studies. The reading and writing skills required because of the lack of teacher and student interaction can be difficult to overcome for some.
The Two Types of Distance Learning
When talking about distance learning colleges, there are two basic types of courses offered. These are grouped into two groups, synchronous and asynchronous distance learning classes. In a nutshell, the difference is that with synchronous learning, you have to attend class. There are set times for instruction, and you will need to be on your computer, attending class at these set times.? The learning and instruction takes place on a set schedule, and communication is through chat or instant messaging in real time. Asynchronous courses, however, give you more freedom. You do not have set class times, and you do not have to log in with the other students to attend virtual class. You do not typically have real time communication. Usually your communication comes on discussion boards or through email. In these asynchronous courses, you truly work at your own pace.
Deciding on a School
There are a number of distance learning institutions and universities that offer many choices to help you obtain your degree online. Once you have chosen what your ultimate goal is, you should choose an online college that fits your learning style best and has a solid reputation among the employers you are targeting once you graduate. You will also want to be sure to choose an online institution that is accredited so your degree is viewed in a good light by any desired employers as well as other colleges and universities should you want to change and go to another university.
Getting a solid education, and a degree in your chosen field, you can enhance your resume and get hired for your chosen career or desired field of work. Whether you are looking to obtain your masters, bachelors or doctorate degree, getting that educational degree can only improve your chances at success.
