Many students finish university now with huge debts. They spend their initial working years paying back their student loans which even though they are at very low interest rates are still a portion of their pay which are gone before they get their payslip. This can affect many areas of their lives, buying a house, getting married, having babies. All may necessitate being put on hold while the debts are settled.
